Brit Tanks vs. Panzers

This was a solo game I played in order to brush up on the rules and take my new Panthers out for a spin. And to try out WWPD's Battle Report generator. As the British forces close in on the Rhine a local German Panzer commander has managed to scrape together a force of Panzer IV's supported by 3 Panzers and two reconnisance armoured cars. Launching a counterattack into the advancing British tanks he manages to catch them without artillery or air support and the result of the battle will be decided tank to tank.

  • 4 Panver IV
  • 4 Panzer IV
  • 3 Panthers
  • 2 8-rads

  • 3 Shermans, 1 Firefly
  • 4 M10c 17pdrs
  • 3 Daimlers
  • -2 Daimler Dingos
  • -2 Sawed off Daimlers

British 11th Armoured: Most tanks remount except Firefly and the bogged sherman and M10 stay bogged. Central Shermans charge forward and focus fire with south Shermans to drop central Pz IV's to one bailed out who passes morale. The M10's snipe a Pz IV in the north.

        COMBAT CASUALTY SUMMARY
        German Panzers

        • Daimlers Destroyed

        TURN 4 SUMMARY
German Panzers: Panthers advance while Panzer IVs focus on the Daimlers.
British 11th Armoured: Reduced to 3 M10s and some Dingos the British decide to withdraw.
The Britsh armour list with its armoured cars was sub-optimal for facing German tanks especially the big cats. It did help me brush up on the rules though. And by stacking the odds in the Germans favour I was able to avoid the almost inevitable disappointment when a new unit (the Panthers) always seems to die right away without doing anything.

Ok I added the pictures unfortunately they are out of order and not embedded in the report but maybe you can use it as a puzzle and try and figure out the course of events. I'll try and get the formatting worked out for next time.

        1. Where's the pictures? I like your British list. Looks quite similar to the one I may be running soon... Just add in some more fireflys, swap the daimlers for stuarts and we are done.

What do you think of the daimlers? I am not quite sure how they should be used. They don't seem totally suited to harassing infantry and won't succeed at more than the odd pot shot at tanks and things.

The 17 pounders becoming AT15 with the new Market Garden book will help considerably with beating up of other armoured companies. The downside is that those front armour 6 tanks and FA4 M10s are still going to get destroyed just as easily. At least now they become a glass hammer as opposed to soft and lacking in punch.

        2. Good question, I couldn't get the pictures to work with the software so maybe I will just photo dump them at the end.

The Daimlers are not ideal since they have wheeled mobility not jeep but with the Inns of Court special rule I think they could be nice. Also if there were roads on the board they would be more useful. If they were fighting against enemy infantry their main role would be to lift gone to ground so that they Shermans could target dug in infantry more effectively. Against this all tank list they were pretty much useless.

Ya the upgrades to AT will be really nice especially with the 11th armoured with its two Fireflies per platoon. While they do have weak armour at long range with the Brtish Semi-Indirect fire rule they should tear up PZ IV's and have a shot against Panthers.
